Upcoming Event: Earth Hour, March 27, 2010
If the Earth Hour is on March 27, 2010, isn’t it a tad bit early for a blog post? Not if you want to read the post and plan ahead
.
Last year’s Earth Hour was seen as a success indeed.В It was more successful than the one the year before, which was more successful in 2007 when this treehugging event started…
What is Earth Hour?
Earth Hour is a very simple concept to understand. Given how much we all consume, it is estimated that if we simply turned off lights for an hour we could be causing the Earth a pause in the stress we create. Thus, Earth Hour has manifested itself as a global, human event, where people, groups, businesses and others get together, and at local time 8:30 on one day, yes, just one day, turn off all lights.
This one hour, translates into immense energy savings.
Why stop with one hour then? Why not make every hour Earth Hour? What is with all the symbolism?
Well, obviously every hour cannot be Earth Hour.В There is a difference between environmental activism and environmental extremism.В That is the difference between turning off lights for an hour and stoning all the lights on your street.
Earth Hour is both pragmatic and symbolic. Just one hour of lights out can cause so much in benefits for the Earth. It also gives people pause and let’s them think of Earth Hour, the Earth, the need for responsibility toward global warming and climate change and so on.В Many times, that is all is needed. Thus Earth Hour achieves several important goals at the same time.
So, it is time to plan, n’est pas?
